L for Lemons and Love (ABC Wednesday)

CIMG7661

I took this photo at the Home & Garden Fair I visited recently; and seeing the lemon tree there brought the old song to mind...

When I was just a lad of ten, my father said to me,
"Come here and take a lesson from the lovely lemon tree."
"Don't put your faith in love, my boy", my father said to me,
"I fear you'll find that love is like the lovely lemon tree."
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower’s sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat. ♫

  1. I remember the song - it brought back memories. Jo and I have been looking at little lemon trees for the conservatory but they are all labelled "Not edible"! I wonder if there are non-edioble lemons?

  3. I love to squeeze a lemon slice, then eat it (except for the skin, of course), when I have tea.

  4. I remember that song very well. Can you grow lemon trees there, I would think the climate is not right. I don't ever see any here, but they grow them in California. I would LOVE one. Lemons are so good for so many things that ail you!

  5. I would love to grow a lemon tree... but alas I live in Canada. :)

  6. I never have to buy lemons in NZ because we have lemon trees in the orchard and I've never seen them without lemons on them. When the song was popular I was still pretty idealistic and thought that it had a rather cynical flavour to it. Now I've lived life. 'Nuff said.

  9. This song still pops into my head whenever I see a lemon tree (which, admittedly is not very often!)

  10. Don't know the song, but at my previous house there was a lemon and a lime tree -loved it! I have several dishes which ask for a few tablespoons of lemon, or lemon peel!

  12. I like this song too, blog it for Thursday theme song, and got my kids to sing it.

Your lemon is quite thin, is it because of your cold weather?

  13. I have this weird idea that the first tree anyone should plant in their garden is a lemon tree. So far I've killed two here, no idea why, they thrive at my son's house only 200 metres away - but I will persist. I always liked that song, too!

  14. We can't grow lemon or other citrus trees here except indoors in conservatories etc; the climate is too cold.
